If you have found your way to this page on the internet by searching for information about college application essays – welcome!
This website focuses on a specific category or genre of college application essays, namely common app essays.
If you are not familiar with the Common Application, it is an organization of over 500 colleges and universities that uses a common application form and a common application process to evaluate students applying for admission.
One of the required components for the Common Application is an essay – which is often referred to as “the Common App Essay” – and this website is primarily but not exclusively dedicated to helping students with their common app essay.
Common App Essays Are Just Like Other College Application Essays
The Common App Essay – that is, the essay requirement for the Common Application – just another form of College Application Essay.
Each year, the Common Application Board of Directors announces a new set of prompts for the Common App Essay.
These prompts are not necessarily exclusive to the Common Application – but every student who wishes to apply to a college or university that is a member of the Common Application organization has to choose one of the essay prompts that are provided on the Common Application.
However – if you are applying to a university or college that is not a member of the Common Application organization, you may well have a College Application Essay to write as one of the requirements of your application, and if you need help with your essay, I would be delighted to assist you.
College Application Essays and Common App Essays All Have the Same Goal
Whether you are writing a Common App Essay – in which case you will need to write on one of the Common App Essay prompts – OR you are writing a College Application Essay which has a different set of prompts – the goal of the essay assignment is the same.
All College Application Essays are intended to give you the opportunity to tell readers of your application something about you that they would not find out from your marks and test scores.
It doesn’t really matter what the essay prompts are – they are generally broad enough to allow for just about any topic – what the colleges and university admission committee members want to know is – can you write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and distinguish yourself in your own voice?
I have borrowed language form the Common Application in the above paragraph, but it could just as easily have been taken from the instructions for any College Application Essay.
Every College Application Essay or College Admission Essay should be seen as an opportunity to say to the Admissions Officer – “Hey, before you make a decision about my application, here’s something about me that I really want you to know.”
What is the most important story about you that you want the reader of your college admission application to know – the one thing about you that makes you who you are and unlike everybody else?
That is the question that you need to answer – and when you do – it becomes the topic of your College Application Essay or Common App Essay – it’s just a matter of figuring out a way to work it into one of the essay prompts.
That is the key to writing a successful College Admission Essay – making sure that you tell the story that you want to tell.
And here’s a key tip: you will never find the answer to a College Application Essay question in a book – like our friend in the photo above – no, you must look into your heart to find your topic.
Why College Admission Essays and College Application Essays Are So Hard
If you are a bit unsure of, or even apprehensive about how to write your college admission essay – there is a very good reason for that.
A college application essay is probably unlike anything you have ever written before.
Not only does it have to be original and compelling – it has to provide deep insight into you – and that is hard to do.
I am a memoir writer – I have written two memoirs and I also write for an
essay writing service for other people – so I am used to looking at personal experiences and seeing the significance and meaning in them.
But I’ve been around a bit longer than you have and I have a lot more experiences to choose from.
For someone of high school senior age to not only identify but to write clearly, concisely and compellingly about an experience of great personal significance is a very challenging and most students simply cannot do it.
I have worked helped quite a number of students with their college admission essays and the Number 1 problem that I see is an essay which lacks depth and insight – and that is because the student has no idea how to drill down into his or her own life experiences and find one that has meaning and significance.
Again – it is not the student’s fault – it is simply a matter of being given an assignment with no training in how to accomplish it.
A College Application Essay Tutor is No Different Than a Football Coach
Can you imagine a football team going out to play without ever having been coached?
How would they know what to do?
Why do you think that sports teams and individual athletes – and we are not just talking about athletes at the amateur level, we are talking about the pros too – all have coaches?
Teams that win championships – Super Bowls, Stanley Cups, World Series – and individual athletes who win Olympic medals all have coaches.
So why wouldn’t you need a coach to help you write a College Admission Essay – which is unlike anything you have ever written before?
The fact is, you do.
I have helped every student who has ever come to me for help and I can help you too.
